Background of Judiciary Department of Pirojpur District
"From the time of Feroz Shah, Ferozpur of Bhatir country,
Pirojpur changed under the influence of Beniya Chakra.
Pirojpur district is surrounded by the hills of Sundarbans, Kaliganga, Baleswar, Damodar, Sandhya Bidhaut and natural greenery. Pirojpur district is rich in diversity with Gopalganj in the north, Barisal and Jhalkathi in the north-east, Bagerhat in the south-west and Barguna district in the south-east. One side of the district is salt water and the other side is fresh water. From the beginning of the nineteenth century, small islands were formed in different rivers and estuaries of Bakerganj district and started to grow rapidly. When the forests of the southern Sundarbans are cut down, the area of cultivable land also increases gradually. At this time, land disputes, peasant revolts in the southern region, the nuisance of pirates in rivers like Kaliganga, Kachan, Baleswar etc. in Pirojpur, especially: theft, robbery, looting and various criminal offenses in those rivers started to increase. As a result, it was felt necessary to establish Pirojpur sub-division for the purpose of creating a convenient department for general administration and land administration and for expeditious adjudication of criminal and civil disputes. The then District Magistrate of Bakerganj, H. A. R. Alexander, proposed the establishment of a sub-division at Pirojpur on 24 April 1856. Pirojpur subdivision was established on 28 October 1859. Along with the establishment of Pirojpur sub-division, for administrative convenience, the police station was transferred from Togra to Parerhat port and the munsef court from Kaukhali to Pirojpur Sadar. After the establishment of the sub-division, a Deputy Magistrate and Deputy Collector were entrusted with the administrative work and the Munsef was entrusted with the civil trial. Civil and criminal justice system was established in Pirojpur district when Pirojpur Mahakuma was declared as a district in 1984. The first district and session judge of the district was Mr. Md. Abdul Quader Khan and currently he is working as the district and session judge Md. Mahiduzzaman. The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Pirojpur was established on 1st November, 2007 through the separation of the Judiciary. Presently Mr. Abu Jafar Md. Noman is working as Chief Judicial Magistrate.
Court infrastructure and judicial proceedings
The Pirojpur District and Sessions Judge Court is a 3 storied building. There is a separate rear room in the court premises. Judicial proceedings of the Magistrate are ongoing in the District Judge Court Building. The work of Chief Judicial Magistrate Court building is currently under construction. District and Sessions Judge has his own bus building. Upazila Munsef Court was established in Mathbaria Upazila in 1983 and the civil proceedings continued till 1993. Later, in mid-1993, the Munsifi Court was shifted to the District Headquarters. However, since 2007, magisterial proceedings have been ongoing in the Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court in the former Munsefi court building. In 2018, Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal, District Legal Aid Office and Land Survey Tribunal were established at the district headquarters. In 1866, the District Lawyers' Association was established. At present, District and Sessions Judge Courts, Additional District Judge Courts, Joint District Judge Courts, Senior Assistant Judge Courts, Assistant Judge Courts, Family Courts, Small Cause Courts, Money Debt Courts, Speedy Trial Courts, Children's Courts, Women and Child Abuse There are courts of Suppression Tribunal, Human Trafficking Crimes Suppression Tribunal, Land Survey Tribunal, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Senior Judicial Magistrate, Judicial Magistrate. More than 15 judges and more than 200 lawyers including District and Sessions Judges are involved in judicial work, together with the Judiciary and Magistrates.
